We’ve all seen the cool gadgets that spys like James Bond has, but of course, they’re all made up just for entertaining us while we sit in front of the screen.

Or are they..? Are they really just made up or do those fancy gadgets exist? In part one of a series we’re running at Techneek, we take a look and see if we can find some real life equivalents to some spy gadgets found in the world of James Bond.

This is a bit of an odd one!

Surgeons in Argentina were able to complete an operation using the light from cell phone screens after a city-wide blackout. The hospital’s generator failed to kick in and they continued to work in darkness until someone stepped into the room - not the Spanish Inquisition but, nevertheless, someone completely unexpected.

In a weird (but true) story, a cat named Oscar who lives in a nursing home has a unique ability to know when people are about to die, giving nursing home staff a few hours to contact the dying patient’s relatives so they can say their good byes.

 ”Since he was adopted by staff members as a kitten, Oscar the Cat has had an uncanny ability to predict when residents are about to die. Thus far, he has presided over the deaths of more than 25 residents on the third floor of Steere House Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Providence, Rhode Island. His mere presence at the bedside is viewed by physicians and nursing home staff as an almost absolute indicator of impending death, allowing staff members to adequately notify families. Oscar has also provided companionship to those who would otherwise have died alone. For his work, he is highly regarded by the physicians and staff at Steere House and by the families of the residents whom he serves.”
